Arthur W. Page Society Will Honor Two Public Relations Legends
Aug 20, 2001
Two pioneers in the development of the public relations profession - Patrick Jackson and Denny Griswold - will be honored with special tributes at the Arthur W. Page Society's Annual Conference, being held September 23-25 in San Diego.
Although both died earlier this year, the Page Society will recognize the impact and influence that Jackson and Griswold had on the profession.
A public relations leader for half a century, Jackson was known as "the public relations counselor's public relations counselor." His firm, Jackson, Jackson & Wagner in Exeter, NH, never revealed its client list except to say that they ranged from "starving non-profits to international Fortune 50 companies." His influence on the profession clearly went well beyond his client list.
For more that 30 years, Jackson was editor of pr reporter, a weekly newsletter concentrated on public relations research. He was also in great demand as a speaker and lecturer.
Like Jackson, Denny Griswold helped shape the public relations field, using her position as the long-time editor of PR News, which she founded in 1944 with her late husband, Glenn. It was the first newsletter devoted to the public relations profession and became known for publishing thousands of "case studies" of public relations programs.
An outspoken and tireless advocate for public relations, she not only covered the profession in great depth but also helped give it an identity by honoring many of its leaders. She enjoyed pinning green "Proud to be in PR" buttons on everyone she could. A feature on Griswold in the New York Times in the early 70s described her as "a powerhouse PR practitioner for PR."
As part of the tribute to Jackson, a Page member, the Society will present their Distinguished Service Award posthumously. The award is given to those who have spent much of their career in service to others in the profession with the goal of strengthening the role of public relations in our society.
