James E. Murphy is Chief Marketing & Communications Officer for Accenture, the world's leading management consulting and technology services firm and serves as a member of Accenture's Executive Leadership Team. In a unique arrangement, Jim provides his management services to Accenture through Murphy & Co., of which he is Chairman and Chief Executive Officer. Murphy & Co. is a management consulting firm specializing in corporate marketing and communications.
In his role at Accenture, Jim heads the company's Global Marketing & Communications Business Practice, comprising 400 professionals worldwide. The business practice manages all of Accenture's marketing and communications activities, including image and market development, public relations, advertising, branding, events and meetings, thought leadership communications, and internal communications. Jim is chairman of Accenture's Marketing Management Committee and the Integrated Marketing Council.
Jim led the effort to rebrand and reposition Accenture, which won widespread recognition for the company. Jim was named "Business Marketer of the Year" by BtoB magazine; he was given the Pubic Relations Professional of the Year Award by the Public Relations Society of American (PRSA); and Sales & Marketing Management magazine named Jim a "Best Marketer." The Arthur W. Page Society also recognized the Accenture rebranding program with its coveted Annual National Award. In addition, Jim was named a leading marketer in BtoB magazine's first list of "BtoB's Best." Jim was praised for his unrelenting commitment to securing Tiger Woods for the company's "Go on. Be a Tiger."campaign. Most recently BtoB magazine named Jim one of the top 25 newsmakers of the last five years.
Jim also chairs the PR Coalition, a group of 20 US-based professional organizations involved in corporate communications, public affairs and investor relations, representing over 50,000 professionals. The Coalition focuses on issues of interest to all communications professionals, such as corporate governance and diversity.
Before joining Accenture in 1993, Jim was Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the Americas operations of Burson-Marsteller. Before joining Burson-Marsteller in 1986, Jim served as the senior corporate communications officer for three of America's most prominent corporations: Owens-Corning Fiberglas, Beatrice and Merrill Lynch. As a result, he possesses a rare combination of experience encompassing business, consumer and financial services communications.
Jim has specialized in investor and government relations, editorial and media activities, sophisticated corporate positioning, and strategic issues. He has also accumulated extensive expertise in corporate advertising, crisis communications, marketing communications, community affairs and philanthropy.
Jim has served on the boards of numerous civic, community and professional organizations, including the Institute for Public Relations Research and Education, the Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern University, the School of Commerce of the University of Illinois, the College of Communication of the University of Illinois, and the March of Dimes. He is past president of the Arthur Page Society and is an accredited member of PRSA. He is a journalism graduate of the University of Illinois and attended the Graduate School of Business at the University of Michigan.
