In a make-shift computer center in the basement of the Houston Astrodome, thousands of evacuees were assisted by AT&T Corporate Communications teams to register at various web sites online and search for missing loved ones via the Internet. Interestingly, the “Texas cow bell” (left center) was rung by volunteers and often by the evacuees themselves to celebrate success in finding an evacuee’s family member(s) in another shelter or safely with friends somewhere. The often-rung cow bell, written up by Newsweek and other major media, became an important auditory tool that lifted evacuees’ spirits and created a sense of hope for those who were still searching. See the news release issued on October 2, 2006 for more details.
